Store Wars vs. The Meatrix

11 05 2008

It’s already a month from my last post and I start again with this two interesting short movies: Store Wars and The Meatrix. Both movies are produced by Free Range Studio who are team of passionate and creative people creating profound and meaningful movies to spread important social messages to people. It is very successful and The Meatrix movie has been translated into 30 langauges. So, what they are about?

The Meatrix is an anti-factory farm story transformed the story elements of the Matrix movie, e.g. the characters and story line, but to display another concept: factory farm. Do you know that all our meats are coming from the factory farm which are packed with over crowded animals and diseases are easily transmitted between animals? Eventually human being are the one who suffered.

The Store Wars is a fight to the Dark side of the farm. You will find very familar Star War scenes inside!FUNNY*! The message? What are we eating right now? Our food/vegetables are polluted with process of genetic engineering, radiation and massive chemical pesticide. In the movie, no production will be harmed in the supermarket. Enjoy them!

Lunar Resonant Streetlight system, the grand prize winner of Metropolis’ Next Generation 2007 contest , which has an embedded ultra-sensitive photocell that responds to the changing brightness of moonlight, turning on and dimming as appropriate, cutting down on unnecessary light pollutionand energy-efficient.

I fully support this initiative. You can do it too! As a designer, what you do is important which can make the difference! Please let designers around you know this initiative and pledge. Do more for our environment now!

Design can change is an effort to bring together the world’s graphic design community to address the issues surrounding climate change.

Designers craft much of the world’s products/media and as such are well positioned to build awareness around this issue while encouraging more sustainable industry practices.”

– Transcript of presentation by Susan Szenasy who is editor of Metropolis mag, while addressing the AIGA 2003 crowd of designers. She had some pretty strong words for us backed up with solid facts.

“But I say that you—collectively, as graphic designers—are starting other fires, metaphorically speaking… You are responsible for helping to create 40% of North America’s solid waste; paper accounts for 81 million tons of waste annually..

Furthermore, the pulp and paper industry is the third largest industrial buyer of elemental chlorine. Chlorine is used to whiten paper, a process which is linked to a proven cancer-causing chemical called dioxin.”

You can earn and shop by recycling!

17 03 2007

recyclebank.jpg

Scoll down for the English version!
“The more you recycle, the more you earn”.

我在公司 email signature 寫了 “please consider the environment before you print this email!”

Philadelphia-based RecycleBank creates incentive for you to do more recycling. How does it work? A unique barcode is provide on the RecycleBank contiainers. Household put their recyclable waste to the bin. Collection trucks scan and weigh the recycling stuff, the more the household contribute, more more you earn for the points - up to 35 USD per month. You can track your points at RecycleBank website and redeem coupouns which can be used to purchase at major chains such as Whole Foods, RiteAid and Starbucks, as well as local companies that choose to be part of the program. More than 250 businesses currently participate. You can also donate your points to charity.
